Gum disease awareness
March 3, 2021
Gum disease tends to be one of the most under diagnosed disease. It is estimated that 80-90% of the population have some sort of gum disease whether it be gingivitis (gum inflammation) or periodontitis (gum inflammation and bone loss). A 2012 study showed that close to 1/2 of the US population have periodontitis. This is a disease that needs to be diagnosed and treated properly in order to prevent from not only subsequent tooth loss, but also systemic diseases such as cardiac disease, diabetes, and severe COVID symptoms. Tooth loss is also a problem, because the more you lose the more complicated the procedure to treat it becomes.
More than ever today, we need to be in the mindset that we can not live with a disease, but prevent the disease from getting to us. Think about the high cost of having to deal with a disease that we might not even understand as well or have been educated. The cost of dental treatment has been high and our goal is to think about what we can do to shift our attention to spending that money on prevention.
