How long does your dentist or dental hygienist spend time going over how to clean your teeth?

Most dentist or dental hygienist will spend only a few minutes. Dentists spend most of the time in treatment than emphasizing the importance of prevention. Remember, we can only stop the progression of the dental problems, but not cure you from your disease!

4 step method

There are SO many dental products in the market today. I will outline 4 important steps and products to cleaning your teeth. This is important to maintain good DAILY oral hygiene that is plaque-free. However, this will not give us a COMPLETE picture. The detail of each step is valuable. We will be having webinar videos in the future to outline these steps in detail. This will also give us more important information as to what we need to do to achieve a plaque free environment.

How do you know whether you have gum disease?

Gum bleeding upon brushing is NOT a good measure to determine whether your gums or teeth have a problem. If you have not had a dental cleaning in more than 2 years, please see a dentist ASAP. The best way of determining whether you have gum disease is through a thorough periodontal exam by use of a probe. It may hurt especially if your gums are diseased and inflamed, but it is important for diagnosis purposes. We can not accurately diagnose by looking at the color of your gums and xrays.

Motivation

The method is different from our normal way of cleaning. Just like any exercise or physical therapy in the beginning, it can be initially painful. We need some encouragement and motivation to maintain perfect dental health. Studies have shown the best way to do this is in small groups. We plan in the future in having group sessions to go over this.
